I have no hesitation in recommending this, as Mr Ch'an Jai Kwong at once gave up the $20 a month which he drew as Coroner's interpreter, when Mr. Snowden requested him to resign that office. He is a gentleman who has gained the regard and confidence of the Judges, and it would afford me much pleasure to be able to convey to him the mark of Your Lordship's favour and encouragement which I have now solicited on his behalf.

As to the Registrar's Clerk, Mr Snowden informs me that a very competent Registrar might dispense with a clerk specially appropriated to himself, but he considers it of great importance that there should be a clerk for all work in the General Office. There is a great deal of copying to be done, and without a clerk for the purpose, the duty would fall on others whose time can be more profitably occupied.
Again, when the Court sits in both Jurisdictions at the same time, the General Office is almost deserted, and a Clerk is then necessary for the carrying out of the duties of the Officers engaged in the Court.
